The hashtag #BilkitsBikini is trending on Twitter after the latest news broke about a woman in China being fired from a clothing brand for using a racial slur on social media.
The report in the state-run Global Times newspaper says the woman was suspended for “disrespecting” China’s Communist Party and was sent home.
It says she used the term “black trash” to describe another black woman.
The woman was told she could not use the brand’s Twitter account for two months, but that she could continue using the hashtag to express her views.
The Global Times reports that her employer, Lotte, had also suspended her account and would send her to another company.
The company said it had been aware of the situation and had “immediately apologized”.
In a statement, Lottos general manager for the Americas and China said: “We have no knowledge of any discrimination in our workplace and have taken the necessary measures to address the situation.”
A spokesman for Lotte declined to comment on the issue.
